Get Up On Your Feet And Move

From the time we are born to the time we lay our heads down for the final time, we move. Movement is part of life and how fit we are depends on how much we move. A baby starts out by first looking around then movement increases until they are completely mobile. As they move their muscles are strengthened and the more they move the stronger they get and their abilities increase. The same goes for those of us that need to start moving again. It doesn’t matter how you move, just move! Now I am not talking about lifting that can of beer to your lips either. According to the Collins English Dictionary, move means to change places or change position.

Take a walk is a good place to start when you need to get yourself moving after a sedentary period of time. Rehabilitation starts by putting one foot in front of the other and so should your rehabilitation to fitness. Take small steps to a bigger, better future. Mike, a contestant on Extreme Makeover had this to say about moving,

I tell people there are no excuses. You can find time to move. Just park far away and walk.

If he could lose 221 pounds then you can too. Another easy way to start to move is by putting on some music and let your body sway from side to side. It may sound simple but you are moving. Add in moves like a turn or raise your hands up and down. Music is a great way to take your mind off the fact that you are indeed exercising. Have you ever seen how people can sometimes get lost in the music as they dance? This can be the case for you too, you could lose yourself in the music to the extent that you will be able to go on longer than you originally anticipated. Music can set the pace at which you walk as well. Walking to up tempo music makes you walk faster than listening to the melodic strains of a symphony orchestra. A good choice would be to listen to songs that you know and enjoy listening to with a good driving beat. Salimpoor, now a neuroscientist at McGill University in Montreal, along with several colleagues reports that

music triggers activity in the nucleus accumbens, the same brain structure that releases the “pleasure chemical” dopamine during sex and eating (and, on a darker note, drives addictive behavior as well).

If this is what music does then listening to music, while exercising, is a good thing. If you enter a gym there is always music playing, aerobic classes are set to music and there are many people that have earphones in their ears, listening to music while they exercise.

Progress In Exercise

As soon as you can you need to improve on the intensity of your workout. This can either be done by walking further or walking harder. Sometimes less is more as long as when you opt for less you work harder at it. You can add weights as another means to intensify your walk and if you are going to add weights then why not add a few extra exercises to go with it like doing bicep curls as you walk. From a walk you can move to a run. A fun way to get running is to train for a specific event. Fun Run/Walks are a great event to work towards. You can either set your goal to walk the route in a certain time or run the whole route without stopping. Your goal for the event is what will motivate you and the feeling of achievement afterwards is reward in itself. Further progression would then be to find a sport or activity that you really enjoy doing. Try many different activities to find the one you really like. When you love someone you want to spend more time with them. It is the same in finding an activity you love, the more you love it, the more time you will want to spend doing it.

When you receive a reward you feel like you have accomplished something, you feel encouraged, elated, confident and even proud of yourself for reaching the goal. It is the same when you are on the road to fitness. Each milestone you reach is another accomplishment under your belt and another goal that you can feel proud of. With each goal you achieve you begin to believe more and more in your abilities, your confidence grows and you can eventually get to the point where you will feel like you can move mountains when you look back at all you have achieved. Another reward is that you will feel happier about yourself and with happiness comes a zest for life. Exercise energizes you, you are able to do more, you sleep far better and the health benefits are fantastic. Being fit is a great way to prevent diseases like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep disorders and more. You will find that the fitter you are the less mundane your day will feel. You will be able to take on any task that is given and you will have the energy to the tasks in the first place. Your outlook on life improves and as that improves you are able to get rid of depression which in itself will open up more doors to well being than you could imagine. Your heart, lungs, mind and soul will love you for what you are doing and you will be able to feel it. You will thank yourself in the end because you will be at peace with yourself and will be living on the brighter side of life. Just like the children’s story about the little red engine that could, if you think you can, you can and will so get on up and move your feet.
